Since its inception, the CISCAI has initiated a number of activities to jumpstart the establishment of a robust Information and Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure in Hanoi, Vietnam and Vientiane in Laos PDR to support the immediate monitoring and efficient management of Avian Influenza (AI) outbreaks in these two pilot sites. Among the IC technologies that are currently being employed include a combination of Geographical Information System (GIS), Global Positioning System (GPS), Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) technologies and the Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) data service such as Short Message Service (SMS), and Global Packet Radio System (GPRS). A key component of the project is the effective and immediate conveyance of AI outbreak data from the field workers, as well as the dissemination of processed information among different stakeholders and the general public at large. In view of this current milieu, CISCAI aims to showcase the many accomplishments and achievements of the Project, and to plan the next steps in pursuit of the project’s completion. The maiden meeting has the following objectives: • To showcase the achievements and accomplishments of the CISCAI Project primarily among its different country partners, namely Vietnam Laos PDR and Thailand in an en banc session, and secondly, among other similar international organizations and entities, working in the area of Avian Influenza surveillance, management and control; • To know the state-of the-art technologies being implemented by different international organizations (apart from the CISCAI collaborators) and stakeholders in the surveillance, monitoring and management of AI, as well as other related environmental health and vector-borne diseases, and harmonize CISCAI’s activities with these initiatives; • To share best practices and lessons learned in the use and application of information and communications technologies (ICT) and related communications technologies (such as but not limited to space/satellite information and communications, GIS/Geo-informatics, etc.) in the surveillance, monitoring and management particularly of Avian Influenza (AI), and in general, for other related environmental health and emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) ; • To identify technology efforts and technology gaps in the implementation of AI-related activities and harmonize these efforts which use ICT and related communications technologies; • To identify common areas of possible technical (ICT-based) cooperation among different AI stakeholders, in pursuit of a shared goal of lessening the ill effects of AI and other EIDs.
