FIRST SIMULATION TEST OF CISCAI SYSTEM - A HUGE SUCCESS!

In what may the first-of a-kind activity where the use of satellite-based communications in tandem with ground-based mobile device reporting of mock Avian Influenza outbreak, the CISCAI Project set a landmark simulation table-top exercise in Phu Ninh, Soc Son District, Hanoi Vietnam last 16 April 2010. Members of field test team, included staff from Department of Animal Health (DAH) and National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE) with the valuable and excellent technical support from the NetNam Corporation and Information Center of Natural Resource and Environment (CIREN) - Vietnam Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the local health and agricultural officers of Phu Ninh, Soc Son District.

SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT: 1ST INCITE-AI SUMMIT SLATED FOR JUNE 2010 IN BALI

As part of its 2010 outreach activities, CISCAI will hold the “1st INCITE-AI Summit - First Summit on INformation & Communication Technology-Enabled Resources for the Control of Avian Influenza” at the Inna Kuta Beach Hotel in Bali, Indonesia from 7-9 June 2010 (NOTE:The 1st INCITE-AI Summit was previously dubbed, "First CISCAI Partners Meeting"). Since its inception, the CISCAI has initiated a number of activities to jumpstart the establishment of a robust Information and Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure in Hanoi, Vietnam and Vientiane in Laos PDR to support the immediate monitoring and efficient management of Avian Influenza (AI) outbreaks in these two pilot sites.

CISCAI EXPLOITS ICT RESOURCES FOR ENHANCED PROJECT COORDINATION

The CISCAI Project has dramatically lowered its long distance communications costs, as well as, air travel-related expenses to and from key partner agencies based in Thailand, Vietnam and Laos PDR. Thanks to the use Voice-Over - Internet Protocol or VoIP and free IP-based videoconferencing technologies (i.e. Skype, Google Video-chat).

“With the adoption of VoIP in the operations of CISCAI, there have been marked lowering in international (phone) call charges”, says Dr. Jose Edgardo L. Aban, CISCAI Project Coordinator. Conversely, there have been marked increase in the frequency of calls to and from CISCAI Project Coordination Unit (PCU) which is based in Jakarta, Indonesia with its remote partners.

Avian influenza – situation in Indonesia - update 3

The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has announced a new case of human infection of H5N1 avian influenza. A 34-year-old female from Tangerang District, Banten Province developed symptoms on 2 July, was hospitalized on 4 July and died on 7 July. Laboratory tests were positive for H5N1 virus infection. Investigations into the source of her infection are ongoing.
