Bird flu or Avian Influenza (H5N1) virus outbreaks have killed hundreds of poultry in four sub districts in Bantul District, Yogyakarta Province, Indonesias Antara news agency reported.
The districts which have been hit by H5N1 virus, are Bambanglipuro, Jetis, Piyungan and Bantul, Sri Budoyo, an official of the Bantul district marine, fishery and animal husbandry, said here today.
Rapid tests conducted on some dead poultry in the four sub districts positively indicated that the animals had died because of the H5N1 virus, he said.
The results of the rapid tests on some dead poultry showed they had H5N1. Therefore, we urge local people to be on alert and take anticipative steps, he said. He said during the current rainy season from January to March 2009, the H5N1 virus threat would be quite high. Bantul needed disinfectant to spray chicken back-yard farms as the disinfectant stock in the district was depleting, he said.
There were 71 bird flu cases in 2007 and 32 cases in 2008 in Bantul. Meanwhile, some 133 chickens believed to have caught bird flu were culled at a hamlet in Balis Badung district last Tuesday (Feb 10). The measure was taken after tens of chickens belonging to Sibang residents died suddenly. source : http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/NST/Thursday/NewsBreak/20090212171541/Article/index_html |
