The  resort sanctuary of Santika Hotel-Bali was center-stage for  the Inception Workshop of the ASEAN-ADB  Project on Strengthening Regional Coordination   in the Control and Eradication of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza  (HPAI) in ASEAN, which was held   from 3  to 5 March  2010.

The  Workshop was participated in by  around  40 delegates from various ASEAN Member States (AMSs) and dialogue  partners.  The two-man CISCAI-PCU team, headed by Dr. Jose Edgardo Aban, CISCAI Project Coordinator and Mr. Bambang Wijayanto, CISCAI Systems Administrator, participated in the  3-day meeting. This was the first time that the CISCAI-PCU had  formally touched base with the prominent group members of the ASEAN HPAI Taskforce.  A 15-minute presentation  on CISCAI was made by Dr. Aban on the second day  of the Workshop. Also, a CISCAI exhibit corner   was put on display for  the whole duration  of the  Workshop.

The HPAI workshop had a four-pronged  objective:

¢  To share and update information on status of the implementation of the ASEAN Regional Strategy for the Progressive Control and Eradication of HPAI in ASEAN (2008-2010) among relevant stakeholders i.e. ASEAN HPAI Taskforce and Dialogue Partners;
¢  To review and share experiences among AMSs and relevant dialogue partners in the control and eradication of HPAI in their working areas with reference to the Regional Strategys eight strategic areas;
¢  To further identify the expected outputs, activities and participating organizations in relation to the formulation of the detailed work plan (s),  mechanisms and arrangements in implementing the New Regional Strategy;
¢  To discuss on HPAI Taskforces inputs for the ASEAN Study on Regional Coordination for Animal Diseases and Zoonoses;

CISCAIs  participation in the Workshop came in timely, since  this  was the first public debut  of the  newly-developed CISCAI products and technologies.   These include the web-based geographic information system (GIS)  and the  cellular phone-based mobile  reporting system, which  were developed from Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) by the  CISCAI Vietnam Team (composed of NetNam Corporation and Information Centre of Natural Resources and Environment of Vietnam (CIREN) staff).

On  the whole, most participants  showed enthusiasm on the  outputs of the project  and conveyed great interest in future possible cooperation. (CISCAI-PCU)
