| MINI-WORKSHOP ON ICT FOR A.I. IN INDONESIA HELD |

Last 16 June 2009, Hotel Ibis Tamarin in Jakarta Indonesia was centerstage for the maiden Mini-Workshop on State of the Art ICT Applications for the Monitoring and Management of Avian Influenza (AI) in Indonesia, organized by the Communication and Information Systems for the Control of Avian Influenza (CISAI-PCU) Project of the ASEAN Foundation. The event was formally opened by Ms. Renelle Ivy Adan, Head of Programs, who read a speech for Dr. Filemon A. Uriarte, Jr., Executive Director of the ASEAN Foundation.
The opening speech underscored the key role of information and communications technologies (ICT) in providing timely and salient information for the various stakeholders of AI. It was also mentioned that the Mini-workshop came in no better time than now, when the world is witnessing a global pandemic wrought by what is dubbed as the Swine Flu or A(H1N1) virus. A first of its kind event held in Indonesia, the Mini-Workshop aimed at establishing a clear and holistic picture of the state-of the-art usage of ICT as regards the monitoring and management of AI. The event also served as a venue to share best practices and lessons learned in the use and application of ICT and related communications technologies (such as but not limited to space/satellite information and communications, GIS, etc.) in the surveillance, monitoring and management of AI in Indonesia, and in general, for other related environmental health and vector-borne diseases. Among the key officials who graced the occasion were the following: Mr. Memed Zoelkarnain Hassan, National Committee for Avian Influenza Control and Pandemic Influenza Preparedness (KOMNAS FBPI) Secretariat; Dr. Elvieda Sariwati of the Indonesian Ministry of Health; drh Sigit Nurtanto, of the Indonesian Directorate Animal Health DGLS-Ministry of Agriculture; Mr. Prasetio Wicaksono, from the World Health Organization (WHO) Representative to Indonesia; Dr. Caryl Lockhart, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO); Ms. Siti Masyitah Rahma, Team Penggulangang AI PP Muhammadiyah, and the Mr. Jonathan Bell, of the Community-Based Avian Influenza Control Project -Development Alternatives, Inc. (CBAIC/DAI). Several presentations were delivered by these organizations during the day-long event, and which were anchored on the key objectives of the workshop. For CISCAIs part, Dr. Jose Edgardo L. Aban provided some highlights on CISCAIs technical design, followed by a technology demonstration by Mr. Bambang Wijayanto, CISCAI Systems Administrator. Later in the day and as a result of the discussions, a Concept-map of all Indonesian-based ICT-related activities was formulated by the CISCAI “ Project Coordination Unit (PCU), and which was based on the discussions and presentations made during the event. Two action-agenda came out of the discussions and which were agreed upon by the participants. These are: ¢ Creation of an AI Indonesian Electronic Mailing list/ e-Forum for the continuous and sustained exchange of information resources among the various AI stakeholders and players in Indonesia; and ¢ ICT activities for the further enhancement and development of Short Messaging System (SMS)-based technologies. Post Mini-Workshop activities are already in the works which include a series of consultative meetings and dialogues between CISCAI-PCU and the Indonesian MOH, as well as with PP Muhammadiyah. The CISCAI project is a project which heavy on the utilization of technology including satellite link, wiMAX, mobile technology, web technology, and GIS technology. In ASEAN countries the utilization of GIS to give an overview and easy to understand data to all the decision makers is so important. |
