The CISCAI - ASEAN Foundation and the Information Technology Research Institute of the Ministry of Science and Technology of Lao PDR conducted a seminar-workshop to present the communication information systems developed by the CISCAI project to control Avian Influenza (AI). Sixty officials from various ministries and international NGOs attended the seminar held on 4 August in Vientiane, Lao PDR and formally opened by Mr. Phonpasit Phissamay, acting Director General of ITRI and Ms. Renelle Ivy Adan, Head of Programs of the ASEAN Foundation.
In her remarks, Ms. Adan highlighted the application of information and communication technologies (ICT) to provide timely and relevant information for the effective control and management of Avian Influenza outbreaks. Ms. Adan also mentioned that, in line with the mandate of the ASEAN Foundation to develop human resources and enhance networking among various stakeholders, the technologies should be applied to other emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) and natural disaster management in the region.

Collaboration of ASEAN Foundation and Muhammadiyah conducted Dissemination Seminar on the Communication and Information Systems for the Control of Avian Influenza (CISCAI) on Tuesday, 4 October 2011. It was attended by 50 participants from donor agency USAID, local and international non-governmental organizations, Ministry of Health, FAO and autonomy institutions under Muhammadiyah Central Board organization. The opening ceremony was opened by Prof Dr Syafiq Mughni of Chairman Central Board of Muhammadiyah and Dr Makarim Wibisono, the Executive Director of ASEAN Foundation.
The collaboration itself was started in the middle of 2009, followed by signing the Memorandum of Understanding in August 2010. It challenged the need of Integrated Participatory Surveillance Database Management System to control the disease of Avian Influenza that involved all stakeholders' participation starting from community or grass roots level up to the decision makers of Local Government Offices, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Agriculture. The system allowed community to participate to report the AI cases. The project was piloted in Bantul District, Yogyakarta, specifically in the two sub-districts, i.e Sanden and Srandakan.

The Communication and Information Systems for the Control of Avian Influenza successfully conducted the final systems simulation and testing in Thai Nguyen Province, VietNam on 27 June 2011 to 03 July 2011. This activity was aimed to simulate and test various wireless technologies including the duplicated Advance Wireless Military Technologies such the Portable Mobile Satellite, Mobile WiMAX Technology and Balloon Wireless Mesh Technology, simulate and test the Avian Influenza Information Management Systems, including the Integrated Web GIS, Mobile Reporting using J2ME application, Video Conference application and to measures and exercises the preparedness of CISCAI team to deploy the integrated systems in order to support the national effort during the avian influenza outbreak.

Located at ASEAN Foundation Training Center, on 23 May to 3 June 2011 the ASEAN Foundation through CISCAI (Communication & Information Systems for the Control of Avian Influenza) Project conducts a Highly Technical Training on the integrated Information System which consists of Web Geographical Information Systems and Mobile Reporting Systems. The two weeks training that was participated by highly technical persons from ITRI (Information and Technology Research Institute) of Lao PDR, CIREN (Center of Natural Resource and Enviroment) of Vietnam and TPFB (Avian Influenza Task Force) Muhammadiyah of Indonesia was part of the CISCAI project technology transfer activities which intended to support the implementation and to ensure the sustainability of the CISCAI Project in their respective countries.

As the outputs of months-long efforts of technology development trickle in, CISCAI and TPFB Muhammadiyah have recently conducts a technical handover ceremony in Bantul District of Jogjakarta. Mr. Ajie Wahidin, the programme officer of the ASEAN Foundation formally hand-over the outputs of the CISCAI - TPFB Muhammadiyah collaboration to the Ms. Dhian Rachmawati, the Head of TPFB Muhammadiyah. The handover ceremony was also witnessed by Dr. Imah from Participatory Disease Surveillance Response (PDSR) team representing the Bantul District Government. The hand-over was aimed to ensure the sustainability of the CISCAI outputs in Indonesia through TPFB Muhammadiyah incorporated with Bantul District Government.
